The Green Burial Society of Nova Scotia’s primary goal is to increase the awareness and availability of green burial and eco-friendly funeral practices for all Nova Scotians.
We encourage all Nova Scotians to ask their religious leaders and funeral directors to help them live their values into death through natural choices (see What is Green Burial).
Green burial provides a more natural commemoration experience for family and friends. We aspire for each person to understand vividly their impact on the earth in death. Burials contribute to the conservation or restoration of native ecosystems. As Nova Scotians continue to live more graciously and intentionally on this earth, green burial is a natural and accessible choice at the end of life.
The Green Burial Society of Nova Scotia is a legally incorporated non-profit society in Nova Scotia. On a volunteer and non-profit basis the objectives of the society are:
To educate, inspire and advocate for the availability of ecologically sustainable disposition practices;
For the purpose of protecting, restoring or enhancing land primarily dedicated for the protection of biodiversity and natural processes including natural burial, to conform with the Conservation Easements Act; and
Directed to purposes that are beneficial to the public and consistent with the purposes of a conservation easement as provided for in the Act, as per the Conservation Act Regulations.
The Green Burial Society of Nova Scotia is a volunteer-driven, non-profit organization independent of the funeral industry. Our mission is to provide Nova Scotians with end-of-life options that support the healing of the earth while minimizing the carbon footprint of death. We are committed to creating sustainable, environmentally friendly choices for those facing the end of life.
The Green Burial Society of Nova Scotia acknowledges that we are gathered on the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq people. This land, known as Mi’kma’ki, has been home to the Mi’kmaq since time immemorial and remains sacred.
In our work involving cemeteries, burials, and sacred spaces, we recognize the deep spiritual, cultural, and historical significance these lands hold for the Mi’kmaq people. We honor the ancestors who have been laid to rest here and acknowledge their enduring presence.
As caretakers of these lands, we commit to respecting and preserving the sanctity of all burial sites and to engaging with Indigenous communities in meaningful and collaborative ways. We also recognize the importance of continuing efforts toward reconciliation, ensuring that Mi’kmaq traditions, knowledge, and rights are upheld in all aspects of land stewardship.
This acknowledgment serves as a reminder of our shared responsibility to protect the sacred heritage of Mi’kma’ki and to honor the Mi’kmaq people, past, present, and future.
At the Green Burial Society of Nova Scotia, we wholeheartedly embrace and celebrate diversity in all its forms. We are committed to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, ability, socioeconomic background, or any other characteristic.
Our non-profit organization values the unique perspectives, experiences, and contributions of everyone. We strive to create a space where all members, volunteers, and stakeholders feel respected, heard, and valued. We recognize that a diverse and inclusive community enhances our ability to fulfill our mission of promoting environmentally sustainable and meaningful green burial practices.
Through our commitment to inclusion, we aim to build a stronger and more compassionate community that reflects the rich tapestry of humanity. Together, we work towards a future where everyone can participate, contribute, and find a sense of belonging within the Green Burial Society of Nova Scotia.
